This chart extracted from Mankiw’s blog displays the grades in an introductory module of Economics. It shows that females seem to be less inclined to complete their studies in Economics following a low grade in this module.
What could be the reason for this?
- Girls might be less interested in Economics, which is definitely a male dominated subject in the UK.
- It could be that Girls are more responsive to lower grades. Feeling the pressure to achieve they might seek out subjects they do well in.
- Taking an introductory course in an american college doesn’t mean you will go on to complete a study in that course. The graph shows that even among the highest achieving Males only 40% of them go on to complete a major in Economics. This shows that females might actually be more open to different subjects and be taking Economics to widen their knowledge, but not to major.
